Throughout the ages superior nations have relentlessly colonized weaker, less developed, people. Many authors have written responses to this, which became known as the idea of post colonialism. One such author is Chinua Achebe who writes of what becomes of a culture after becoming “colonized.” This idea can be further analysed through the lens of “The Post Colonial Studies reader constructed by Bill Ashcroft, Gareth Griffiths, and Helen Tiffin. In the novel the people are being colonized in the form of religion, contrary to many other forms of colonization, but still very common. The ways of this new religion -- Christianity -- contradict the traditional ways of Okonkwo’s people. As the story goes on the dispute between this new religion and traditional values of the people wage on in this tale of colonization. This idea is exemplified as stated in the Historical Development of Postcolonialism that “often the colonizers justified their cruel treatment of the colonized by invoking European religious beliefs. From the perspective of many white Westerners, the peoples of Africa, the Americas, and Asia were “heathens,” possessing ways that must be Christianized (236).
When relating post colonialism to the text I feel that it will be very helpful to utilize the information given between 236 through 243. In regards to the novel i am planning on separating the ideas presented in The Post Colonial Studies Reader into three separate sub categories. I am no completely certain how I'm going to do it yet but my thoughts were that the first body would analyze how the people received the colonization, how they rebbeled or accepted it, etc. the second will relate how the colonizers justified their actions. And the third will tie the two together beautifully and add in the end result.
